Yesterday while I was at work some random guy asked me "Are you Muslim? Why are you working? I thought Muslim women didn't work. I thought y'all stayed at home and took care of the children while your husbands provided for you." So then I had to explain to him that first of all, not all Muslim women are married and not all Muslim women have children, like myself. I'm single and I'm not a mother. Then I came to a disappointing realization of how ignorant many people in America are about Muslims, Islam and our lifestyle. Some people don't understand the differences between American Muslims and Muslims from other countries. Most of the Muslim women that I know between the ages of 20-40 are actually single and don't have children like myself. People have so many stereotypes about Muslims that are so false. The level of ignorance and stupidity is seriously unbelievable. So just for the record, American Muslims do NOT have arranged marriages. We marry whomever we want to marry. We also don't circumcise young girls in America like some Muslim countries do around the world. All black American Muslims are not with the Nation of Islam. Just because someone is Black and Muslim doesn't mean they're with the Nation of Islam. My parents and myself don't know anything about the Nation of Islam at all. I know who Louis Farrakhan is but I never been to any of the NOI functions or temples. If a person is Black and Muslim in America, it doesn't make them any less Black. We still share many of the same experiences as all Black folks in America. I felt somewhat offended and disrespected by that man's question, especially since I've worked hard my whole entire life, don't come from a wealthy family, was raised by a single mother on welfare in a low income neighborhood, eight people in a two bedroom apartment, never had any help or handouts from my parents, and never been "kept" by any man just like many other Muslim women that I know. I honestly come from humble beginnings and have had to get it out the mud all by myself my whole entire life. I know women that aren't Muslim that don't work. That's really a woman's choice whether she wants to work or not and has nothing to do with their religion. That's why I feel like it's my obligation and duty to educate and inform people about Islam because some people really think, believe and say the dumbest and most ignorant stuff ever. Maybe that's where all of Hollywood's potential hijabi actresses were hiding out at. They were at home being kept. Lol 😂. I work long hours on set, they at home being kept. Too much fun to have and history to make for me to be stuck at home being kept. Thank God I'm not kept. 🙌🏾 Mashallah. I love my job and I love working. I always have. There are Muslim women that are doctors, lawyers, politicians, judges, models, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, designers, etc. all over the world. Some are married but many are not. Even if they are married, they still have their own dreams, goals, will, purpose and brain of their own separate from their husband's. Every Muslim woman isn't married to a wealthy man giving them an option and choice to work or not. If you think all Muslim women are married to some Middle Eastern billionaire, living a life of luxury and wiping our behind with gold toilet paper then you thought WRONG. I don't know why people think Muslim women are just a bunch of submissive human beings with no backbone, no brain, or willpower to think and do as they please because that is NOT TRUE AT ALL. We're not here to serve and worship men. We only worship and serve God. ☝🏾 So please don't make general assumptions and stereotypes about us.
